Organizing an architectural competition and consulting the client in the concept design stage
We led the organization of the international architectural competition for the Tartu Downtown Cultural Center on behalf of the Tartu City Government, overseeing the involvement of necessary experts and consulting the client throughout the concept design process.
Scope
A 25,000 m² multifunctional public building, including a library, Tartu Art Museum, event center (featuring an 800-seat hall), as well as dining and rental spaces.
Character
The project involved coordinating the competition brief, organizing the work of the jury and expert panel, and compiling the final competition protocol. We prepared the technical description for the design phase, managed the collaboration with experts, and facilitated international reference visits to New York, Berlin, and the Netherlands. Additionally, we consolidated expert input and compiled client feedback for the design team.
Challenges
One of the key challenges was aligning input from a diverse client team composed of multiple institutions into a cohesive vision. We also organized the efficient review of over 100 competition entries for the jury and experts, ensuring precise documentation of final decisions. During the design phase, we coordinated the collaboration between an expanded expert team, the client, and the design team, ensuring smooth communication and integration of expert insights.
